When it comes to the health of your family, it’s important to make sure it’s in the best state it can possibly be in. If your child is constantly battling a stuffy and blocked nose despite you trying a myriad of solutions, the culprit may be one of these three unexpected factors below. Have a look and take the necessary steps to restore their health and end the sniffles.

Your Insulation

The insulation in your house may be the reason why your child seems to have respiratory issues. If it’s not set up well enough to ensure that your house stays warm when it gets cold outside, your upstairs may be colder and dryer than you think. This can cause irritation to the nasal passages and throat, leading to sniffles, colds, and other respiratory illnesses. This is especially the case if your child’s room has an easy or direct pathway to the attic. Normally, your roof needs to be inspected about once or twice a year to make sure that everything is as it should be. If it has been long since you had your roof inspected, schedule an inspection as soon as possible in order to rule this out as a cause.

The Fan in Your Child’s Room

If your child has a fan in their room, there are a number of ways it could cause your child to have a stuffy nose or itchy, watery eyes. The first one is by circulating pollen, dust, and other allergens in the air as it spins. This makes it impossible to avoid breathing these allergens in and so your child constantly has their allergies aggravated. The second one is a result of the fan drying out the air in your child’s room, especially if you don’t have a humidifier in it. Breathing in dry air forces the nasal passages to produce excess mucus to lubricate it, causing irritation. Fans like the 500 CFM system are able to run on your household’s normal current without any special electrical considerations, but this should not make you too comfortable to run it constantly. If there’s a chance that it could affect the health and long-term comfort of your family, it’s best to find alternative methods to keep cool.

Your Child’s Teeth

Another unexpected factor that could be causing your child’s sniffles is, believe it or not, their teeth! Crooked teeth are the second most common dental insecurity, but they can cause more problems than just insecurities. If your child has a jaw misalignment or crooked teeth, their misaligned bite can actually have a direct impact on their breathing. This is especially true at night. Misaligned bites can sometimes cause obstructed sleep apnea because the bite negatively impacts the soft tissue in the back of the throat. If you suspect your child has a misaligned bite, be sure to take them to their dentist.

If your child and other members of your family have the sniffles and they just don’t seem to go away, the problem might not be the common cold but instead might be something in your home. Make sure your insulation is in great shape, your fans and HVAC filters are clean, and your child’s bite. You’d be surprised by what keeping all three in great shape can do.
