If you’re a couple planning a wedding for yourself, you know there will be many things to pay for. As you begin outlining your wedding budget, it’s normal to want to save money wherever you can. If you’re a creative person, you may decide to design and create the flower arrangements for the wedding. However, even a small wedding will take some planning and skill.

1. Choose Your Wedding Colors

Begin your DIY flower arrangements by envisioning your wedding colors or theme, and plan for the flowers to fit that theme. Over 90% of brides use the internet to find information to help them plan their wedding. If you don’t already have a wedding color theme, you can find many ideas online to choose from.

2. Choose a Wedding Venue

It will also be helpful to know the layout of the expected site of the wedding ceremony and the location of the reception. Finding the right wedding venue is often tricky since popular wedding venues are often booked a year – or more – in advance. According to Quipli, over 10,000 companies are available to rent venues for events.

3. Choose Your Flower Locations

When you have a theme and know the layouts, you can list places you want to place flowers or plants. For example, in addition to the flowers carried by the wedding party, many people place a flower arrangement on the altar where the ceremony will be held. You’ll also be likely to place a centerpiece at the head table at the reception and possibly on the other tables.

4. Choose Your Budgetary Limits

How many arrangements or bouquets you need to make will be influenced by your budget. In most cases, the prices of wedding botanicals will depend on the size and design of the arrangements. For example, a plant can be purchased for under $30, while an average floral arrangement can cost between $50 and $80.

5. Choose Your Flowers

With your wedding theme in mind, begin the planning process. For example, if your color is pink, choose tall bright pink flowers for the background of the centerpieces and bouquets; like calla lilies, hyacinths, or snapdragons. In the middle of the arrangements, place pink flowers of medium height, like roses, begonias, and peonies. The final elements can either feature a contrasting color like navy blue, magenta, or purple – or add to the “pink” theme with tiny pink flowers like cherry blossoms, primrose, or strands of meadowsweet.

6. Choose Some Finishing Touches

Once you arrange the three main types of flowers, add baby’s breath or Queen Ann’s lace for a touch of elegance. By varying the number and position of the three types of flowers, you can have color-coordinated flower arrangements. You can also utilize pink or white ribbons and clusters of moss or ferns. To learn ways to arrange flowers effectively, you can find many instructional articles and videos online.

7. Choose to Preserve Your Flowers

To allow the flowers to stay fresh as long as possible, cut the stems at a 45-degree angle before placing them in an arrangement. Place the flowers in approximately four inches of fresh, cool water – and change the water every 1 – 2 days. Strip the leaves and thorns of the branches of the flowers before placing them in water.

Arranging the flowers for your wedding can save you money. It can also allow you to use your creativity to help your wedding flowers become an essential element of your theme. Gather some friends the week before the wedding to help you create the flower arrangements. On your wedding day, those flowers will be one of the many lovely memories you’ll treasure, from your wedding.
